Back to School for Your Car Too!

Back to School Road Sign with Dramatic Clouds and Sky.

Although it may still feel like summer time outside, back-to-school time is right around the corner. August is always a busy month for parents and kids. Parents are trying to squeeze in last minute vacations and the kids are wanting to play with their friends all day! One item that is not usually on the top of the to-do list when heading back to school is your vehicle maintenance. Whether you’re attending high school, heading back to college or you’re the chauffeur for your family, your vehicle is going to need a little TLC before heading back to school and work!

Check the Tires

Check the tires for uneven tread wear, nails or other potential hazards. One easy way to check tread depth is inserting a penny into a groove—if any part of Abe Lincoln’s head is obscured, you have enough tread. Check the pressure on each tire with a gauge when they’re cold (not driven). Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s suggested pressure, which is located on most vehicles on a sticker inside the driver’s door, center console, glove compartment lid or in the owner’s manual. Also, make sure the spare tire is inflated and a jack, lug wrench and jumper cables are in the trunk! The last thing you want is to get a flat driving to drop the kids off at their first day of school!

Emergency Kit

Check to see if your emergency kit is up-to-date. It should have some of the essentials such as, band aids, pain reliever, alcohol pads, rope, a flashlight, jumper cables and anything else you may need in case of an emergency. Make sure your emergency kit is in a safe place that you will be able to reach in case of an emergency.

Know Your Car

Pay attention to your car and familiarize your child with the car as well. Make sure they know where they can find the safety equipment, spare tire and owner’s manual. Familiarize yourselves with the particular noises of your car so you are more aware of anything unfamiliar and different.

Make sure to schedule a service appointment with one of our certified technicians that will be able to service your vehicle and get you back on the road! Doing routine maintenance on your vehicle will not only ensure your safety on the road, but it will also prolong the life of your vehicle!

5 Vehicle Tips to Stay Safe this Summer

7

Whether you are heading to the beach with friends, taking a road trip with your family, or commuting back and forth to work, it is important that your vehicle is ready and properly prepared for the summer months. That is why All Star Volvo of Baton Rouge has compiled a list of vehicle tips to ensure that you will stay safe this summer!

Get your Vehicle Serviced

Before you get on the road, get your vehicle serviced. Regular maintenance such as oil changes, battery checked and tire rotations will go a long way towards preventing breakdowns. If your vehicle has not been serviced according to Volvo’s recommendations, schedule a maintenance checkup with us right away! You can schedule a service appointment by clicking here!

Check the Weather

The summer months are popular times for severe storms and flooding, so be sure to check the weather before you head out. Driving in the rain can be dangerous, and flooding can quickly turn deadly, especially if you drive into high water. Even short showers can make roads slippery as rain mixes with the dirt and oil on the road.

Double Check those Babies

Keep kids and pets safe in the car at all times. Make sure your children are properly secured in their car seats and booster seats. Also make sure they remain seated and buckled in when the vehicle is in motion. If you are traveling with a pet, make sure the animal is properly secured in a harness or dog seat belt. Here are some different options for a dog seat belt if you are traveling with a larger dog. Pets are part of the family, so make sure they are properly secured also!

Stay Alert

Stay alert and focused! This is especially important if you are taking a road trip and driving early in the morning or late at night. Make sure you take stops along your route to stretch, get something to eat and drink, return calls or text messages and change drivers if you are feeling tired or drowsy. If your trip is more than a 10-12 hour drive, consider staying overnight at a hotel or family resort so you are well rested for the remainder of your drive.

Potholes Ahead!

Look for potholes. Especially after a rainy day, potholes can appear everywhere on the road. Know the roads you’re on and keep an eye out for dangerous potholes that can cause damage to your tires!

These are some great tips to remember if you are about to take a long road trip, or just for your daily commutes to work and doing errands! Summer time is a great chance to spend some much needed time with family and friends, but always remember these tips to stay safe this summer and you will be ready for any adventure thrown your way!
