Summer Heat Tech Tips

ASTBR & ASV

We all know how blistering hot it can get in Louisiana during the summer time, and getting into a hot car is never fun. You burn your legs on your hot leather seats, you feel like you need to wear oven mitts to touch your steering wheel and your dripping sweat before you even start your car! Summer can be tough on cars, especially during high temperatures when heat can destroy batteries and stress the cooling system and tires. As a precaution, these vehicle components should be checked periodically during summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems. All Star Volvo is here with some awesome summer tech tips to make sure your car is in perfect condition for the hot Louisiana weather.

Burning your legs on a hot leather seats or touching the piercing hot steering wheel is never fun. A cheap way to help prevent this is to invest in a sunshade. A sunshade is designed to keep your seats cooled while your vehicle is parked. It almost looks like aluminum fool stretched across the inside of your windshield. There are also ones designed for the back seats to keep your children’s seats cooled as well. Also, to keep your vehicle cool while it’s in motion, have tinted windows! Tinted windows allow light to pass through but most of it is reflected. Remember that at least 70% of the light needs to pass through the tint in order for it to be legal.

Oil is the lifeblood of your car. It keeps hardworking engine parts running clean, smooth and cool. Most owner’s manuals suggest that you change your oil and oil filter every 7,500 miles. All Star Volvo Technicians suggest every 3,000 miles or three months. The fact is, most of us do a lot of heavy driving during the summer when an engine is more likely to overheat. So at least check your oil before you head out on that road trip with the family.

  • To check your oil, let your car run for a few minutes, then park it on a level surface and shut off the engine. Open the hood and locate the oil dipstick. You’re looking for two things here: the level of oil and how the oil looks. If you’re low on oil, you can either add another quart or simply change the oil completely. The oil should look brownish yellow and clean on the stick. If the oil is a dark color or there’s a lot of dirt and grime in it, then you definitely need an oil change and oil filter replacement.

Don’t leave items in the car. We all know not to keep perishables in the car, but the sun can also affect CDs, DVDs, laptops, cell phones, and toys. Put the items in the trunk or better yet, take them out if you won’t be using them regularly!
